Caterpillar continues to shift its range of motor graders to the Next Generation platform, announcing the Cat 150 and 160 motor graders as the latest models to receive the redesign. The machines feature smarter controls, greater efficiency and enhanced operator comfort.

Smarter controls

\n\n

The two models are now equipped with Caterpillar’s easy-to-use joystick steering controls: optional on the Cat 150 and fitted as standard on the Cat 160.

\n\n

“Hours of ergonomic research shows how joystick controls reduce hand and arm movements for the operator, when compared to the usual lever and steering configuration,” said Eric Kohout, Caterpillar senior product consultant for motor graders.

\n\n

“Reducing operator fatigue is key to maintaining and improving productivity,” he pointed out, “so transferring control into two three-axis joysticks completely redefines operator comfort.”

\n\n

The joysticks place transmission, gear shifting and machine-direction control on the left, while the right handles drawbar, circle and mouldboard functions as well as throttle control and manual differential lock and unlock.

\n\n

Both the 150 and 160 provide exacting control through nine forward and six reverse gears, with a new finish gear that allows the operator to achieve precise grading results. Used for the final stage of the grading process, the finish gear ensures the ground is uniform and even, delivering the specified slope and elevation requirements for demanding construction projects.

\n\n

The 150 model comes with a 12-ft mouldboard as standard, while the 160 features a 14-ft version; upgrades are available to 14 and 16 ft, respectively.

\n\n

“The Next Generation platform is all about efficiency, productivity and operator comfort,” stressed Mr Kohout. “These new models achieve those objectives in many ways. From a practical perspective, the machines maintain the dimensions of those they replace with a C9.3 engine providing strong, consistent power to the ground.”

Redesigned cab

\n\n

Another highlight is the fully redesigned cab, first introduced on the upgraded 120 and 140 models. Larger windows maximise all-round visibility, with particular focus on the mouldboard and tyres, while the ‘operator-first’ approach continues with improvements to HVAC and seat adjustment options.

\n\n

Visibility can be further enhanced with optional integrated rear vision, front vision, 360-degree cameras and Caterpillar’s People Detection system, all feeding into the cab’s 10-in touchscreen. The same touchscreen also controls optional technologies, such as Cat Grade. Both models allow easy upgrades to attachments, ensuring they hit grade faster.

“Caterpillar motor graders have long been revered for their ‘grade any terrain’ capability and impressive jobsite productivity. The new platform serves only to make that offering more robust still,” said Mr Kohout.

\n\n

The Cat 150 with joystick option will launch in European countries in the second half of 2026. A full launch for all configurations and regions will follow.

The new Cat 120 GC motor grader offers the right balance of high-performance features with reduced fuel consumption, low maintenance costs and easy-to-operate controls. Excelling in low- to medium-duty applications, the machine delivers reliable, low-cost operation in a range of projects that include government and municipal work, county road maintenance, and finish grading.

\n\n

Its powershift transmission and balanced machine design ensure appropriate drawbar power to the ground with the fuel-efficient Cat C4.4 engine. Adapting engine power and torque to application demands, the 120 GC has electronic throttle control to improve grading productivity.

\n\n

Featuring precisely matched engine power ranges for the standard rear-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, the standard Eco mode operation increases fuel economy up to 5%, lowering owning costs. The hydraulic cooling fan, with optional reversing fan for high debris applications, only runs when necessary to further reduce fuel consumption.

\n\n

With its familiar steering wheel and lever layout consistent with the 120, 140 and 160K models, the efficient hydraulic system provides more precise and predictable control for a consistent grade. Its transmission with torque converter eliminates the need for an inching pedal, so only throttle and brake pedals are required to simplify operation.

\n\n

The drive system’s no-spin differential automatically unlocks in the turn to eliminate required input from the operator. The parking brake automatically engages when the machine is in neutral and the service brake is disengaged.

\n\n

Built with long-life machine structures for reliable operation, the 120 GC’s standard drawbar circle moldboard boosts durability with hardened circle teeth and replaceable wear inserts protecting main component structures. This design stays factory tight to provide long-term precision grading, while the circle drive slip clutch option protects the drawbar, circle and moldboard from potential damage if the machine strikes an immovable object.

\n\n

Easy to maintain, the available Circle Saver option reduces daily greasing requirements and repairs to the circle and pinion. The grader’s new front axle design maximises bearing life to minimise maintenance.

\n\n

A narrow machine width of 2.4-m plus cab choice of standard or low-profile to reduce overall transport height to 3.12 m improves machine transportability. For operating comfort, the cab offers an option between mechanical or air suspension seat, while the control console and steering wheel easily adjusts to the operator’s preference. Pressurised to prevent debris entry, the cab’s optional HVAC system circulates fresh air to keep the windows from fogging

Several options are available to enhance machine flexibility and fulfill specific customer requirements. The optional Digital Blade Slope Meter shows the operator the grade without relying on manual grade checkers. Available all-wheel drive boosts traction and efficiency, while the increased engine power that comes with the option leads to greater performance on slopes and with poor underfoot conditions.

\n\n

The Cat 120 GC offers 3.0 m, 3.7 m, and 4.3-m moldboard options to meet a range of road coverage requirements, and a newly redesigned mid-mount scarifier results in better visibility to the attachment while decreasing overall machine length. Improving machine performance, the 120 GC features a common front bolster for a choice of front lift group, counterweight, or front blade option, which aids in spreading more material faster. The rear of the machine accommodates a ripper or tow hitch option.

The Cat 140 GC motor grader is designed for high performance with low owning and operating costs. The Cat C7.1 engine, 6F/3R automatic powershift transmission (that eliminates the inching pedal), and precisely designed hydraulic system ensure the balanced performance of the machine in all operating situations.

\n\n

An Eco operating mode and demand-fan reduce fuel consumption, and extended maintenance intervals further minimise operating costs. Operators of all skill levels can quickly achieve high production with the 140 GC, and options that include adjustable seats and efficient heating/cooling systems guarantee comfort.

\n\n

With 45 years of refinement, the 140 GC’s conventional steering wheel and lever controls are familiar to operators and ensure positive control. The control console adjusts to the operator’s preference, and the powerful heating and cooling system option dehumidifies and pressurises the cab while circulating fresh air to seal out dust and keep windows clear. Seat upgrades include mechanical or air suspension; static seat is standard.

\n\n

The 140 GC’s standard no-spin differential activates with no operator input to increase traction in poor ground conditions, and to protect drivetrain components from damage. The optional Digital Blade Slope Meter takes the guesswork out of slope control and keeps the jobsite safer by eliminating manual grade checks. Cat Detect with Vision System (optional) uses a rearview camera to show a wide view behind the machine.

\n\n

Other features of the 140 GC include: standard drawbar circle mouldboard that provides a long service life, with replaceable wear strips that maintain the system’s integrity; oil-bath, multi-disc service brakes that are hydraulically-actuated for smooth, predictable braking and lower operating costs; and a variety of attachments, like scarifiers, rippers and front blades, which increase machine versatility.

\n\n

There are also circle-drive slip clutch option that protects the pinion drive and circle teeth from potential damage; and circle saver option that reduces daily greasing requirements and protects the circle and pinion, significantly reducing the potential for damage.

\n\n

In addition, optional guarding protects the 140 GC from damage in demanding applications, and optional secondary-steering system automatically activates if main pump pressure drops.

The new LiuGong 909ECR excavator has an operating weight of 8,900 kg, maximum digging reach of 6,847 mm and maximum digging force of 63 kN. It is equipped with a EU Stage IIIB engine that delivers 44 kW (@ 2,200 rpm), and standard bucket capacity of 0.28 cu m. Providing excellent stability, this compact radius machine is a highly versatile tool carrier, enabling it to use a wide variety of attachments, ranging from buckets to hammers, in road and inner-city applications.

\n\n

For heavy demolition applications, LiuGong offers its new 950 demolition excavator. The machine has an operating weight of 64,320 kg, maximum working pin height of 30 m, maximum pin reach of 17 m and maximum attachment weight of 3,000 kg. Positive customer feedback focuses on the machine’s improved stability and stronger 30-m-long reach boom, said LiuGong. The design of the attachment group also allows changing of standard equipment to high reach equipment and vice-versa in 30 minutes or less.

\n\n

Operator comfort and safety are top priority in this demolition excavator. The cab is modified by replacing the front window screen with five-layer laminated glass, and the same modification has been applied to the roof glass. The front and roof glass are then butt joined to the front screen to give unsurpassed upward vision for the operator when working with the attachments. Thanks to increased visibility with the tilted cabin, a ROPS/FOPS certified cab and standard rear-view camera, the operator can focus on the job with confidence.

\n\n

The new LiuGong 4180D motor grader offers 324-degree panoramic visibility owing to an innovative 5 post cab with a single C-pillar, a completely new cab interior that sets the benchmark for comfort and efficiency. New impact resistant materials have also been introduced to provide better weight distribution and increase recyclability. In addition, access for routine maintenance has been improved to reduce downtime. The machine has a blade width of 3,960 mm, operating weight of 15,500 kg, maximum drawbar pull of 84 kN and maximum travel speed of 42 km/h.

\n\n

The LiuGong 4180D is powered by a EU Stage II engine that delivers 142 kW of power. The machine recently won a Red Dot Award in the Product Design category. “Visibility, operator comfort and ergonomics were quickly identified as the key areas of focus along with blade articulation and manoeuvrability,” said Gary Major, director of LiuGong’s Industrial Design. To develop the machine, LiuGong’s UK-based Industrial Design team worked in close co-operation with customers and operators to rethink the traditional grader.

\n\n

The LiuGong 848H wheel loader with new Ergo transmission delivers multi-tool flexibility with maximum power, minimum emissions and a safe and comfortable operator environment. It features an operating weight of 15,500 kg, breakout force of 129 kN, standard bucket capacity of 2.7 cu m and dump clearance of 2,840 mm. The new Cummins QSB6.7 engine combined with a wet axel and a five-speed transmission, with a lock-up clutch torque converter as standard, complies with EU Stage IV regulations. Advanced load sensing hydraulics and auto shift transmission ensure rapid cycle times. Productivity is further enhanced by LiuGong’s quick coupler that enables fast and easy swapping of attachments.

\n\n

The 856H is another new wheel loader from LiuGong. The machine’s carrying and V cycle speeds are consistently high due to the EU Stage V engine, wet axel, five-speed transmission and standard lock-up clutch torque converter. Ergonomically designed joystick further enhances the operator comfort and increases total productivity. Silicone oil shock absorbers improve the ride quality over the roughest terrain and help prevent material spillage. The 856H offers an operating weight of 21,200 kg, breakout force of 175 kN, dump clearance of 4,021 mm (side dump) / 2,894 mm, and bucket capacity of 2.5 cu m (side dump bucket).

\n\n

For applications that require heavy lifting, the LiuGong 890H wheel loader will come in handy. The Cummins Stage IV engine is designed to develop more power at low speed, maximising torque output. The power shift transmission and advanced load sensing hydraulics combine to provide superior breakout force with speed and agility. Efficiency is increased further by the Intelligent Power Cut Off function, which improves braking and supports the hydraulics in reducing fuel consumption.

\n\n

The 890H also provides better safety and comfort for the operator, including enhanced dust filtration, which significantly improves the cab environment. The machine features an operating weight of 30,800 kg, breakout force of 245 kN, dump clearance of 3,330 mm and bucket capacity ranging from 4.5 cu m to 9 cu m. F
